Roto Smeets Group (RSG) depends a great deal on society, but as a leading business in the information and communications industry, it is very aware of its own role in society; a role associated with responsibilities that go further than purely financial and economic business conduct. RSG recognizes its impact on employees, the environment and society as a whole. After all, the group works with suppliers, customers and other partners as participants in daily social intercourse. RSG’s activities also impact the environment, of course. The group uses raw materials like paper, ink and water, consumes energy and generates waste. RSG is also an organization of people. The development of our employees is a central focus for us, with continuous attention to safety and a healthy working environment. This corporate social responsibility report (CSR) presents our accountability for our performance in terms of people, the environment, and society.
In broad terms, RSG’s CSR strategy is concerned to combine good business results with protecting the environment, utilizing the talents of our employees, and contributing to society. RSG has integrated a concern for the environment in all its business activities, and we conduct our business so as to limit harm and nuisance, using campaigns to highlight safety, energy saving, waste separation and waste prevention, and transport management. We continue to seek ways to reduce the material we need, and to render it fit for re-use. Where possible we do this in collaboration with our suppliers, selected for their sustainable business practices. We also advise our customers on product development. Minor modifications can lead to a significant reduction in material consumption.
Given that employment in the graphics industry is declining, we are focusing our HR policy on the personal development of our employees. Not just in relation to their jobs so they can be deployed in a wide range of work internally, but also to identify and develop their talents to keep them up to the mark in the employment market. We also offer industrial training and work experience slots in our in-company training courses.
The operating units all have their own sponsoring budget to encourage their involvement with society. They also regularly make facilities available in support of social objectives. The Group’s sponsoring is only available to charities in which our own employees are involved as volunteers.
Our health management policy is concerned to optimize all the parties involved throughout the chain and thus draw them together. For example, we try to stimulate our employees’ health by close collaboration with Cohesie and by using Present, the Zilveren Kruis Achmea health management product.
We regularly draw our employees’ attention to the RSG Code of Conduct, which was introduced years ago, to reinforce the values and standards on the work floor that we believe are important.
In the immediate neighbourhood of the plants, RSG makes a positive contribution by supporting local activities and keeping neighbours informed of any changes in local operations or possible incidents.
